About

Thank you for your interest in our study. The experiment involves taking electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings of your brain activity while you complete a computer-based task, during which you have to make a series of simple choices between four different visual stimuli (which we will show you on the day of the experiment). I'm not sure how much you know about EEG technology so let me explain a little about it:

EEG is a safe, non-invasive technology, which involves wearing an electrode cap to measure your brain waves while you perform a task. The electrodes don't contain electricity, or anything like that - they just sit on the surface of your scalp to pick up the activity of your brain underneath. This involves using a little bit of conductive electrode gel (kind of like hair gel) in your hair so the signal can get from the surface of your scalp to the electrodes - for this reason this will not work on participants who have very short hair or shaved their head (because the resistance of your skin is increased) or have dreadlocks (because the electrodes need to be in direct contact with your scalp). The gel will wash out of your hair in water, and we have facilities available in the lab for you to do this, if you would like to.

If you wear makeup, some sections of the makeup on your cheek and forehead will rub off because we will wipe little patches skin of your skin with an alcohol wipe. We do this because the electrodes in these locations need to be in contact with clean skin.

We are looking for participants aged between 18 and 35 years (for consistency with past studies). The computer-based task takes around 45 - 60 minutes, but you should allow around 90 - 110 minutes for the experiment, because we need to fit the electrode cap first. You will receive $20 reimbursement if you choose to participate. The EEG lab is located in Room 409 of the Redmond Barry Building at the University of Melbourne Parkville campus.
